In Japan, April 8th is the recognized birth date of the Buddha. Not every country celebrates on the same day, but we'll wish Lord Buddha - who has gone beyond all birth and death - a happy Birth Day today! I didn't know, and I'll have to celebrate, as I collect Buddhas (which somehow seems very un-Buddha-like, but there you go), and my house and yard are full of them (the plump, smiling buddha Hotei).
Well, I'm not sure they know exactly when Shakyamuni Buddha was born - perhaps they know about the year but not the month, something like that. But why not April when spring is bursting out all over and flowers are offering themselves daily? :)
