Sandy took several photos of our umbrellas on her deck one rainy rainy day and said we could use any of them for our next few lessons in fluid acrylics. Our homework was to pick one photo, draw it out on hotpress paper (1/2 sheet or larger), and be ready to paint Tuesday.
Here's what I have so far. I liked the overlapping parts in this photo the best. Then I took the color out to see the values.
And then I drew it - but I'll need to enlarge it more after I get the values right on the drawing (on 11 x 14 tracing paper).
We'll be working with a limited palette of colors, trying out some of the fluid acrylics - I've never used them before and we'll be using them very wet like watercolors.

Cool! I like it Rhonda, good choice, the water will provide a lot to play with, hey, have you forced the angle of that floor on purpose? just wondering, I can't wait to see what your next step will be, you can't miss that class, hope your cold is better by then sweetheart.
Teresa.
I did make the angle of the boards on the floor more abrupt. I'll have to check that on the larger sketch on the hotpress paper. Of course, it works that way, too, I think...maybe...
That's going to be a great painting, I can tell!! Very cool composition.
This will look so neat painted. Love the placement of the umbrellas. In your drawing is the left edge of the umbrella on the viewer's right at the center mark? The line going outside the picture frame is why I am asking as it makes the umbrellas look more centered.
It does work Rhon, it has impact for sure, adds a sensation of rush, don't know how to explain it, I jsut didn't know if you were going for that or not.

I love this. My husband and I just got back from our vacation in northern Wisconsin and one of the first things I did was check your blog. I'm hooked. I can't wait to see your painting.

Teresa and Nava, I think you may have more faith in me with this one than I do - this is the first time I've tried this fluid acrylic/batik look painting - in fact, it's only the 3rd time I've ever ever used acrylics! Oh, well, using them like watercolors is pretty cool and it's a lot of pouring (which I've done with watercolors). Keep your fingers crossed.
Candy, I'm glad I've got you hooked! I like gaining new "viewers" that comment.
Ann, the large umbrella on the viewer's right didn't turn out at the center when I redrew it on 1/2 sheet so that's good.
