I read someone online who critiques artwork say the true sign of an amateur is one who jumps around from subject to subject (or maybe from medium to medium) so I’m am amateur. And I never said I wasn’t so I’m okay with still learning and keeping things spicey…
Signed up for a collage workshop (Collage Makers Summit) through the artist (Drew Steinbrecher) who hosted the printmaking workshop last year. I have all these printed papers so why not learn how to use them well?
Here’s Drew’s bonus lesson (prior to the class starting Monday).
Collage a sheet of paper (I used a heavy piece of mineral paper - like Yupo but not as slick).
Then turn that collage over and cut the paper into pieces - same sizes or different, doesn’t matter.
Then see what you have and work with those, either adding more collage work, rice paper, etc., or acrylic markers, etc., to embellish the smaller collages and make them more interesting.
I liked the outcomes on all of them, but Sweetie says the lower right one looks better with the blue on top and I think he’s right. Another thing about this is that you can turn in however you want and see what looks best to you.

Interesting take....I think the sign of an amateur is someone who stops learning...whether that is from sticking to the same subject or materials...repetition and playing safe can mean stagnation rather than mastery perhaps. I also think that if you create go forth and create, it is up to history and other people to decide if it is art or not. Labels can be stifling.
There is so much to see in all of these! Colour, texture and pattern - so interesting to explore. Best wishes.
Thanks, Lisa. That is definitely a different take on the subject and I think you are right - when you stop growing and learning is when you are no longer an artist maybe? Reminds me of the Wallander mystery series (Brit TV and the books by Henning Markell) where his father painted, basically, the same scene over and over, some had a grouse in them and others did not :).
Collage looks like fun. I have tried it but not successfully.
I am an amateur too then
Thanks, Laura. They are fun but messy - all that glue! Ha ha. But it’s an interesting way to view a composition of just shapes and see if it works or not - a lot of mine do not work but the good thing about collage is you can just keep adding.
