BROOD X - 17 YEAR CICADAS ARE ON THE PROWL

Who is this spooky woman in my back yard?  It’s just my mimosa tree draped in protective covering to keep the dreaded Brood X 17-year cicadas from laying eggs in the limbs and trunk.  To me, it looks like a woman standing out in the yard!

We have hundreds of the cicadas out and screaming their lovely mating scream now and they are all over, crunching underfoot, on everything that’s close to the ground (plants, shrubs, etc.).  Some people find them a nuisance and others find them terrifying, while biologists find them interesting and just a fact of life every 17 years here in the our area.

Here’s just one of the red-eyed beauties.  Think about that, times 100 or more!

Never thought I'd say this, but, What a pretty picture of a cicada!
Your mimosa does look a little like Nike of Samothrace!

Rhonda you dig a great netting sculpture...it does look like a woman! We experienced those 17 year cicadas a couple of years ago. The birds were very happy when they arrived and for once I was able to get some cherries off my tree because they were too busy feasting on those meaty bugs. :)! Take care and have a great week. Hugs!

They are interesting red-eyed bugs, Laura! Our local bakeries are getting in the game with cookies shaped and decorated like cicadas (no cicadas in the contents, though!) and small cakes and some tee shirt makers (I have a tee shirt from the last batch in 2004 that says I Survived the 2004 Cicada Invasion with a cicada on the back saying Party Animal :). And yes, I’ve been wearing it!!

Thanks, Debbie. Wrapped it all up, pinned with plastic clothespins to keep it closed, small decorative bricks at the bottom to keep it down on the ground and so far, so good, but it does look like a woman out there in the yard! ha ha
