There are some paintings that just want to beat you to the ground. No matter what you do, it looks bad. This is one of those...
I keep doing more - more color, some plastic wrap in the background, some more color, some more shaping of the berries...
And it still looks bad.
Should I just admit defeat, gesso over it (it's on 9" x 12" canvas) and do something else?
This has salt on the leaves, Chinese White on the berries, and phthalo blue watercolor ink in the background.
And it still looks bad! ha ha
Oh, well....
Where is that white gesso?

Thanks for visiting and your lovely comment.
Don't call it a battle, it is all experimenting and discovering and learning. And having fun. I love the way you are always doing new things and sharing your art.
Ah, yes, I guess I should be kinder to myself when struggling - not really a battle, just another experiment and exploration. But it truly does sometimes feel like a battle! ha ha
Hi Rhonda,
Actually, it's bright, has effective contrast, wonderful colors and isn't too detailed.
What's not to like?
You're certainly not alone in feeling this way, but you know that. To gesso, or not to gesso? That, is the question.
Whatever you decide...it will be the correct choice. :)
Have fun deciding!!
Sincerely,
Gary.
Sometimes you just have to go back to that drawing board - it's all part of the learning curve. Call it a "challenge" instead of a battle!
Wow, amazing. Rhonda, you're the winner. Take it easy. Cheers, Sadami
You made me smile, Rhonda. I really like this piece, every incarnation. I'd be darned pleased with it. At least you have skills and ideas to work with your pieces and bring them to fruition! Me? Not so much but I keep giving it the ol' college try! My Belleek vase was an epic fail. Ah well...
Thanks, Gary. I haven't decided yet and am leaning towards liking it in person - we'll see!
Deb, yep, it's all a challenge - and a learning experience but sometimes you just want it to be easier! ha ha
Thanks, Sherry. Keep working at it and trying - it's all we can do, right?
Oh boy, do I understand the term "battle." Some paintings seem to flow down my arm and out of the brush onto the paper. Others have to be dragged out kicking and screaming!
Thanks for stopping by and for the comments, Alice Jo. You know, several times I've started to post a comment on your blog and then find Google wants me to create a Google+ account and I just haven't done it because I have to read legal stuff about Picasa and what they can do with my photos - sorry! I really do visit and see what you're doing regularly!
Hmm, thanks for the heads-up. I have disabled Google + comments from my blog. Hopefully that fixes the situation. I love that you included me in your blog roll, by the way. Fun!
I am enjoying watching this "battle" as you call it unfold. However, I think you are the winner. I really like this with the blue in it.
Alice, I can comment on your blog now!!! Thanks :)
Thanks, Carol. I am liking it more as I get some distance from it :)
