GETTING CLOSE TO THE END OF THE WORKSHOP???

And we’re doing eyes?  I would think that would have been the start of the lessons but, hey, whatever…

Beards and Eyes

(I do like the way the pastels and the conte crayons scratch across the paper, creating the beards!)

And I have one question:  Hot enough for ya???  It’s like an oven here.

These are lovely! As my portrait expert friend, I have a question....as a very much terrified of portrait drawing person....does face furniture like beards, glasses, hats etc make portrait drawing easier or harder? Do they provide shapes/colour/texture that make the form easier to see? I have a mental block...I can draw the portrait of a shell or natural object but when it comes to a person I am a quivering wreck.

I just saw that I didn’t respond to this, Lisa. So sorry! I think the main thing is, as all the instructors say, don’t try to get the image correctly because that is just for commissions - just know what eyes and noses and mouths look like. I do a lot of measuring (or did, at first, but find myself doing it less now). I do think one draws or paints portraits to get the image correct - but if you don’t know the person or see the photo reference, you don’t know how close you are to:). Take the pressure off yourself with it but learn the real shapes of things (we have our own images of things = almond shapes are eyes, etc.). Drawing the shells as you do, I know you could do faces, too, because it’s all about the shapes of things and the values, just like the shells :).

These are fantastic. Beards are hard to do--hard to make them look not pasted on, and you've done it. I'm always amazed at the work you do in the Sketchy classes!
