In the new watercolor book, Painting Birds by Sarah Stokes, she reminded me in one lesson, that starting a watercolor painting with watercolor pencils can give a painting a different look. So I found a few photos Sweetie took in Costa Rica and began with laying down color in watercolor pencil…then blending with clean water. Two times watercolor pencil and two times water = this.

Rhonda I really like these. I play around with the watercolor pencils quite a bit. You have done an amazing job...no one would know it was done with watercolor pencils. Hope you are staying cool. We are very dry. Becoming quite a concern because it looks like it will continue for at least another ten days. Well take care and have a great week. Hugs!
Debbie, thanks so much. I may try more of the watercolor pencils and clean water as I like the roughened look you get = perfect for nature things! Oh, everything is bone dry here and we keep hoping for a day or two of nice rain but nothing…guess this is our future (hope not). Try to stay cool and hydrated and enjoy the days you can get out when it’s below 90!
I have been playing around a little with watercolor pencils for sketching. I used to avoid them because the color seemed too intense (crazy, right?). You really handled them well building up layers to a subtle and lovely result
Thanks, Laura. I haven’t used them much but it’s a neat way to add some texture (and you really need to start light, leaving spaces so when you wet them, the colors blend well).
