LOBENBERG MODEL FINISHED

Finally got back to the model and the portrait in Paynes Gray (Winsor Newton).

I like doing portraits in a single color and will do more of these.  It does help you focus on the shapes and shadows, lights and darks.  I hope you try it sometime, if you're interested in learning how to do portraits.  And David Lobenberg's DVD that lays it all out for you is a keeper!

  1. This finished grandly! What I love about doing portraits in one color is that the person seems to be emerging from the shadows. She definitely does this in your portrait. Very good, Rhonda!

  5. Wow, Rhonda, that portrait is stunning. Looks like you just dashed it off with no effort (but I know different). It has a wonderful drama to it (the contrast is just right). I'm a big fan of monochromatics especially indigo. Strong piece. Best

  7. Lovely strong painting. Monochrome works are often so much more atmospheric. This reminds me to do more of them. Thanks, Rhonda. Great post.

The expression on your portrait somehow serves the color you chose to paint it and vice versa! Very beautiful job!!

  16. I really enjoyed watching this paynes gray portrait develop. I mentioned you in my most recent blog post where I did a paynes gray under painting or grisaille.

Happy birthday to your fantastic photographer husband!
