This is one of those paintings that looks so much better in the photo than in real life. Although I could play with it more and darken or lift some colors, I think I’ll just move on to something else and try out those purple/violet pigments again on another iris painting.

Rhonda I personally think this is beautiful based on your photo. Purples for me can become muddy but not yours. So lovely. Hugs!

Thanks, Debbie and Jennifer. It looks much more delicate and pretty in the photo than it does in real life - where it looks blotchy and overlaid with opaque lavender from Cheap Joe’s (I rarely use opaque pigments but intended to use it on this one over the top but it just muddied it more). Again, I appreciate your comments but you would need to see it in person to see what bothers me about it - and the next one = ugh; I really went wrong there. Funny how you can do 2-3 in a row and they are clean clear, pretty, just right - and then do 2-3 in a row that just don’t work out! I once had a teacher tell me you were doing well if you were making 50% winners. Sometimes I know I’m there and then those losers show up and, well…I don’t let it get me down, just move on OR look at the loser and see what makes it so and if I can change it or improve it. So, in this way, even the uglies can teach something!

Irises are so hard ... and so tempting! There's a lot to like here--it's a very nice drawing, and I like how the whites on the lower petals describe the folds!
Thanks, Laura, another one to come later in different colors…I think tube purples are not good enough to show variety in value and shape. But learning each time I paint, whether it turns out well or not.
