OWL SKETCH

Val Webb asked us to do a few sketches before trying to paint our birds in her online class, Painting Birds in Watercolor and Beyond,  this week, focusing on the eyes.

This is a great horned owl, Kentucky (from Jerry's Raptor group).  I drew him in graphite on cold press watercolor paper.  (Not sure why it looks a bit green as it's on 140# cold press Fabriano, I think.)

Excellent sketch, Rhonda. You've definitely captured the intense stare that all owls seem to have. We had a family of five (mom, dad, three kids)Great Horned Owls in the neighborhood this year. Beautiful creatures, and it was fun to watch the babies grow. It sounds like a wonderful class you're taking.

Thanks, Carol. Oh, to have a family around. This spring I heard two owls calling to each other but have not heard them since. It is a good class with lots of information shared, not just about art techniques, but about the birds themselves.

Great owlish stare - sounds like a good class for you, definitely a bird person! I saw an eagle owl on our neighbour's roof a few weeks ago - the first one in years, so hope they are coming back to our 'hood!

Thanks so much, PS, Sherry, Debbie and Suzane for your comments on this one. Yes, Cathy, I do love my birds and wonder when this love began because when I was younger, I never paid much attention to them at all. Perhaps when we get older, we stop and look more at our surroundings :)
