Great white egret in full mating plummage (from one of Jerry's photos). I think this bird was just landing in the still water of an inlet.
I think I went overboard with the black india ink on this one, and the feathery bits really should be white. I have white acrylic ink so may go back in and put that in for the really wispy parts.
This is another class assignment from Val Webb's online course, Painting Birds in Watercolor and Beyond. Still loving it and pushing into things besides just straight watercolor on paper. Val really gives you your moneys worth and then some and she did a gorgeous Great Blue Heron this week (a darker bird with more color would probably work better with the ink and watercolor).

Thanks so much, Suzanne. I am fairly confident with my drawing skills except when it comes to portraits! This one is just ink first and then watercolor - but I do intend to do more with the gouache and ink using colored gouache next time. So many art techniques, so little time!!
