POEM WRITTEN IN RESPONSE TO A POST BY CAROL KING DEFINING THE COLOR VERMILION

Vermilion is organic, true and honest -
perhaps more orange than red -
and yet as blazing as sunset burning
an afterglow on the retinas.

Bright and exhausting in your mixes,
she often misbehaves -
for, of course, Vermilion is pure female -
and she always knows her own way.

I didn't have a One Word Wednesday photo ready today and have class to teach this morning.  I was reading a post by Carol King and she included a definition of Vermilion in her post.  I thought, as did she, that the definition was boring, uninspiring and needed more poetry - don't all the colors need to be defined with poetry? - so I wrote this before I got ready this morning for my student.

Now you try it!!!  Pick a color and give it some poetic definition!  What words come to mind when you think of a color?  Have fun!!

Wonderful - I'm hopeless at poetry or any sort of creative writing unfortunately so I'll leave your little challenge for those more able to rise to it - and look forward to reading all the colour inspired poetry!

Well, I just LOVE your definition of vermillion! It's so much better than the merriam-webster on line version.

Poetry never was my forte! LOL Can you tell I am not even close to being a romantic? Glad there are people like you in the world who can put words together so beautifully.

Thanks so much, Sharon, Carol and Sherry. Just had to come up with something and pretty much did this off the top of my head. But just think of what could come from
Azure
Indanthrone
Cobalt Violet
Crimson?
But Hansa Yellow Light doesn't inspire much, nor does Azo Yellow - the Yellows may give us problems! ha ha

LOVE the idea of giving your favorite colors a poetic description! :)

Thanks, Kathryn, try it! Pick a fave color and then just free associate with words and see what comes up :)
