I JOINED THE STRATHMORE WATERCOLOR SKETCHING GROUP

Cathy Johnson, artist and writer, is running a workshop (free!) for Strathmore and I signed up for it months ago, thinking I would have time.  I'm going to have to make myself do the "lessons" but they will be enjoyable.  On my Strathmore Visual Journal (140# watercolor paper) 9 x 12.

I think you can still join up, if you want.  We just began March 1st and Cathy has a reputation for being an excellent teacher.

Here is my first journal entry, recording my new Daniel Smith Shadow Violet watercolor.  I think it separates and looks (on the palette) like Moonglow (also by Daniel Smith) but I like it so will have to see which one I like the best.  (This is just on half sheet of the 9 x 12 sheet in the Visual Journal).

Cool, Rhonda! I joined it too. Be sure to post your paintings so I can see them.

Oh, ha ha! I didn't notice that you DID post your first one. There are also 2 places to post them on the workshop site, one in "Photos" and one in a thread in the comments section. Lots of really good sketches posted already.

Michelle, I'm not sure I'm posting the photos to the right place - it gets a bit confusing. But if you saw it, then I guess it's okay where it is. I have a flickr account so can do flickr or the My Page thing under Workshop 2, too. There are a lot of good things already - it may get too overwhelming to comment on many at all! ha ha

Hi Rhonda! I signed up for her workshop too, but have yet to do my first entry. I find yours inspiring! Wonderful! I better get busy.

Looks like you are taking your instruction seriously at the present.Well done for your commitment. Looking forward to seeing your work.

Thanks, Peggy and Mick. Sometimes it seems I go off in all directions as once but it does offer a bit of a break from other things and it all adds to my knowledge base as long as I stick with (mostly) watercolor :)

I wish I could squeeze in some workshop taking time too. I'm sure this one would be useful. I quite like that muted violet, though I agree that many of DS violets/purples are similar.

I love journals like this. Everytime I try to start a journal, I end up with messed up pages and want to start over. I end up never having a completed journal.

Michelle and Peggy, don't forget to post your first journal page!!

Jeanette, you have to take new colors with a grain of salt (so to speak! ha ha); but when Carol Carter used it and I saw what it did on paper, I had to try it, not knowing that the Bloodstone Genuine acts similarly. A good reason to do a few swatches and tests to see which one I like the best.

Sherry, I know what you mean - that first page in the journal stops me cold at times but once I'm over that, it's fine sailing. And, of course, you can remove those pages you HATE! ha ha If I don't have a little online workshop like this (which is pretty unstressful and work as you go), I won't do it, either and this keeps me doing at least 1 thing each week in it. We don't have our second lesson/assignment until Thursday so you could still join us!

Me too :) I'm glad it's an 'at your own pace' deal. I may get things up by August :)

Pam, you'll be great at this! Yes, at your own speed and you can even complete it after the workshop is over - I think the videos and instructions stay up for a while. I'll look for your paintings when you can share :)
