GCWS ARTIST RECEPTION

Sweetie and I went to the artist reception for the Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society show yesterday evening.  It was my job to take photos of the winners - we had a First, Second, Third and 3 Honorable Mentions out of 86 paintings.

My friend, Deb Ward, got First with her painting of Ball Jars.  The painting is called Muncie's Pride (Muncie, Indiana is the home of the Ball Jar and Ball State University as well as Ball Hospital).

Sweetie got this photo of Deb with her painting - but this was before she got her First Place Award and ribbon - so I took another (but was making her laugh too much! ha ha)

Second place went to Jean Vance, a tri-state artist and teacher.  She was not at the opening when the prizes were announced at 6 pm so I didn't get a photo of her.  Her painting is called Stoningham, Maine.

Third place was won by another friend, Ritzie Junker, for her first ever attempt at painting on YUPO!!  It's called Waiting.

Ritzie sat across from me in class when we were both in Sandy Maudlin's intermediate watercolor class.  I haven't seen Sandy in years, but I still see Ritzie at the GCWS meetings.

And the 3 Honorable Mentions are:

Jean Ammerman's gorgeous landscape called (1) Secluded Cape Cod Pond.

Susan Grogan's (2) Citta di'Venezia. Susan was away at a graduation and couldn't be at the show.

And R.H. Carpenter's painting of crows named (3) A Difference of Opinion!

There were A LOT of really good paintings in the show - it is a strong watermedia show and you should see it if you can get to this area - so I was very pleasantly surprised to win an award.  I've never won an award before!

The show runs through Sunday, June 19th and is open every day but Monday.  The hours are:
Tues-Fri 9:30 am - 3:30 pm
Sat - Sun 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

And the members who arranged and contributed to the reception goodies outdid themselves!!

Rhonda, congrats on your award! It looks like a really lovely show, and the members look happy. I do miss being part of a society like this. When I lived in Key West I was a member of the K W Arts Center, where we had an annual members show and monthly meetings/demos. I also remember my first award for one of my painting there…You feel humbled and excited (and kind of embarrassed) all at the same time….at least I did. Will you be able to post more individual photo of your members work…or is there a web site? Thanks for sharing this…it’s brightened up my day.

Congratulations, Rhonda! I am glad to see that you are in great company. The crows are the painting with character, for sure.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments on the show and the win :) First time I've ever won an award in a show! It is a really good show, too - strong paintings all around.

Maggie, Sweetie took photos of some of the paintings (his favorites) and I'll put those up later so you can see more of the member's work.

Carol, that necklace was one I hadn't worn in years and decided it worked well with the white top - didn't think about it matching the background in the crows! ha ha

Hi Rhonda,
Congratulations! I'm sure you're bustin' your buttons about this and I know that your many followers couldn't be more pleased for you.
Personally, I feel your painting deserved a higher award, but what can we do?
You'd better get busy--Now that you've broken through, we'll be expecting to see many additional award posts--and soon!
Your portrait is drying and should be on it's way in about a week. Hope I can finally deliver on this promise!!
Have a great day and again, Well Done!
Sincerely,
Gary.

Wow, congratulations Rhonda - it looks like a wonderful show and your crows right up there! I enjoyed seeing the other beautiful paintings you posted today too, thank you.

Thanks, Myrna, but I know it's just what it is - you can win one day and not even get in the next show (although this was an open member show so not juried in, it was a strong show and I was pleased to have worked behind the scenes to make it be a success). No sales yet and I'm not expecting one for mine but one never knows about that, either! ha ha

Thanks, Gary! Good to hear from you, stranger :) Ah, you know, you win, you lose - it's all just a game you have to play. I did enjoy seeing my painting placed in a good spot, though :) And I'm looking forward to seeing that portrait - but no pressure...

Cathy, thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the show paintings I could share.

Congratulations on the award Rhonda, that is a fantastic painting, maybe you're best I'd say. Nice to see Deb's work also, looks like a good show. Sorry to be behind on the blog scene, not keeping up anybody these days. But I'm here now, and want to add my round of applause. :)
