CAROLINA CROWS + GLASS BOWL

I'm not finished with either of these - but I'm getting very close.

The crows now have a title and I've been thinking about another crow painting - something a bit darker, this time. I need to finish up the puddle and the branch on this one.
(This is 1/2 sheet Kilimanjaro 140# cold press watercolor paper with Daniel Smith watercolors.)

The bowl is a project painting for WatercolorWorkshop (the Yahoo group created by Susie Short). Those of us who choose are painting the same photo from a demo shared by Susan Roper. My sepia is not the sepia she recommends. She says American Journey (Cheap Joe's brand) lifts back to white better and I have Daniel Smith. (This is on an Arches 140# cold press block of watercolor paper. )

Hi Rhonda, Great bowl, what is the white shadow? The group sounds fun. I'll have to look it up? Is it open to new memebers?

Looking at your earlier post, I did not realise you had painted so many crow pictures - all with such interesting effects and compositions. Makes for a great body of work to preSent to a gallery - especially one called CROWMAN. !
Like the title of this latest one and the bluey/green background colours.

The bowl really sparkles like crystal, huh? I am glad you didn't find it problematic to lift the DS sepia paint. I have not tried that one, but have only seen a few others struggle with lifting it. I think you did a great job of this, I'm glad you did it!

The crows are looking great!! the puddle is going to be a neat addition. I like the crystal, too. you managed to get a lot more highlights to the right of the bowl then I did. very pretty!

Thanks, Cathy, and yes the WatercolorWorkshop group is open to all watercolor folks. The white is the glinting of the glass on the surface of the table, I guess - that's what it looks like in the photo.
Joan, thanks...you must have missed the crow frenzy! ha ha
Susan, I think it is a bit harder to lift, maybe, but it's working okay. I overlifted in areas and now need to go back and darken and shape some things and call it done.
Thanks, Lisa :) I saw a lot of those white glints, I think, and may have done too much.

Like those rich darks in the crows and the bowls has very good volume, form and values.

I love the drama between the crows and the subtle tension in the background. Yummy :)

Thank you for your comment on my blog, I think she'd have liked the silver too! I love your painting of the glass bowl! It is so simple yet complex and satisfying to look at.

You're on a roll with crows. You're getting a good collection here.

And that bowl is fabulous. There are so many brands of paints and each one has different characteristics, some good, some bad. This one worked in your favour.

I have an antique bowl that I keeping considering painting. One day...

Thanks, Ann, Pam, Jeanette and Deb for your comments on the crows and the bowl. Sorry for the delay in posting a reply - been to the doc to get some better meds for this bad back pain...feeling very little pain right now (and also adding a lot of letters to my typing so if there are badly spelled words, don't blame me, blame the meds!)
