After much stress and tension, we did another portrait in class today! Boy, you can cut the tension and nervousness with a knife when several people are painting people they know and trying to get it right.
Oh Rhonda! I think you have shown such growth in this portrait! It just glows with the vitality of youth. The hair is wispy and right, the skin tones are fresh and lovely. My one nitpick, and this is coming from someone who struggles with lips and smiles in portraits....It looks a bit to me like her mouth is set offcenter when you look at it relative to the nose and eyes? Like her head was turned one way from the nose up and the mouth set from the opposite direction. Am I seeing things? Please take with a grain of salt as this is, if it exists, a small nitpick in relation to the excellence of the rest of the portrait. You really are a "loose" woman this time!

Susan, I'm not happy with the painting and need to let it rest a while and look at it with new eyes comparing it to the photo again - something is really bothering me - and you know Sargeant said a portrait was a painting with something not right with the mouth (or something similar to that).

It isn't very relaxing, is it? How many times has someone said to you "oh, you paint, that must be relaxing."?
Anyway the tension didn't stop you from producing a good painting.
Rhonda - that's a great one!! you've really captured the attitude and the challenging expression in her eyes.
Rhonda, I love how you are stretching your wings and working with these portraits. I am so impressed!
