Gum Nuts - A Whiter Shade of Pale?

Mixed up some American Journey Periwinkle (Cheap Joe's) and some Verditer Blue (Daniel Smith) because both of these pigments have white in them. Had to have a white so used White Gouache. Mixed them all with some acrylic matte medium so they would be permanent when dry. And worked on the gum nuts and some white highlights here and there. Not happy with the nut on the left - I like some of the things that are happening, though.

Success! Much improved over the photo. How about making the yellow line of the left nut have some variety in width as it crosses from one side to the other? Just an idea. Looking forward to seeing it in real life.

I like the mix of opaques with transparents - this is becoming a real nice one!

I like the effect of the light filtering down through the leaves and nuts. I think you are going ot like the finish on this one. I am intrigued by adding the acrylic matte medium to watercolor, had not thought of that. One question, does it change the look considerably, say could you use it here and there in a watercolor painting without drawing unwanted attention to the areas it was used? Just wondering!

Thanks so much, Sandy, Nava, and Susan, for your comments on this one. It was slow going and I wasn't sure where it was going - but I think it's almost there. And I'm not displeased with it.
Susan, mixing the acrylic matte medium with watercolor doesn't seem to make much change at all in the colors or in the look of them when dried so I'd try it. I don't think you'd be able to tell it wasn't pure watercolor throughout the painting if you added a bit here and there. Experiement - a bottle of matte medium doesn't cost much and you'll have lots of it to use :) I think the pure acrylic was used a bit too thickly in places (still learning) and it has a shiny look in spots which I don't like - but still learning, like I said...

Nicely done Rhonda. I like how the main nut has a soft glow against those darks.

Thanks, Ann! It may be close to done - not sure yet but not painting today.

Hi Rhonda,
I love what you've done to this! Your shadow work is great and the nuts look beautiful. I'm also intrigued by the matte medium - did you want those areas to be permanent so they wouldn't lift with later washes? Looks great!

Thanks, Deb :) Yes, I added the matte medium to the watercolor so the painting wasn't a mix of acrylic and watercolor (and when you spray the paint, it works if it's acrylic but not watercolor - that just makes mud).
