Umbrellas - Next Stage (Done in Class Tuesday)

Lots of working on this one in class. Tired when I came home!

I just need to do some minor tweaking of things now: removing all the misket on the umbrellas and working on those areas. Leaving the star of the show - the main red umbrella center stage - until next week in class. Many of the students are doing umbrellas - some doing the same photo Sandy is doing - some doing another version.

I don't know where the green umbrella came from - for some reason it wanted to be green :)

And I can't call them primarily umbrellas anymore - because I used about 3 other colors instead of the red, blue, yellow primaries with which I started. So maybe now they are A Rainy Day at Sandy's Studio.

The close-ups show the texture you get with the fluid acrylics - it just happens - and if it doesn't happen naturally, you wait until it's drying and then drop in clean water to blossom out the colors and make it create the texture - so cool!

Well, Rhonda! I have so little "vision" when it comes to these poured paintings that I truly could not see how these umbrellas would eventually "appear", but they did! This is wonderfully colorful and the shine in the puddle on the wood decking just really tells the story. I am waiting impatiently to see this one finished, it is going to be a beauty, I can tell!

Ooooh! Gosh! I've been away too long. These umbrellas are phenomenal, Rhonda! Except that you say you're using the fluid acrylics, that umbrella in the right foreground looks like a Sandy dark formula with Ultra Turquoise, Q. Magenta or Violet and Maybe some Q. Burnt Orange. You're doing great! (Enough exclamation points!)

Glad you all are enjoying the procedure, Susan, Dawn and Suzette :) I do love that texture. Sandy said I should enter this one in a juried show BUT it's not finished yet and finishing is my weakness - what to do with all those whites in the umbrellas that have to be unmasked and dealt with. We'll see. In the meantime, I start the gum nuts painting. That mix of colors is a mix of the FUB + Quin Red with some Cobalt Teal Blue + Jenkins Green (a dark almost black green) + a few other things mixed on the palette! ha ha

Wow! It is amazing how this painting has developed and I love it. I think you have inspired me to get some acrylics.

This is looking great! I'm enjoying the textures and colors in the different umbrellas. The show stealer for me is the green umbrella against that blue and reddish orange.

Oooooh - you've got some gorgeous colors here, Rhonda, and wonderful shapes. I have fluid acrylics, but only used them to dye collage papers. Maybe I should give them a try with a brush?

WOW! Rhonda, the color is exquisite! Keep going with this technique. You really have a winner here. Start telling yourself you are a strong finisher. I agree, enter this into a competition. CWA has one coming up.

You guys sure do make me smile!!! Thanks so much, Vicki, Ann, Nava and Myrna (you're right, Myrna - I need to tell myself I am a strong finisher!!!).
Vicki, if you get the fluid acrylics, get Nick Simmons' DVD from Creative Catalyst - it shows everything you need to know to paint like this. Nava, I didn't use a brush much at all - and when I did, the paper was pre-wet so the fluid acrylics just blossom like crazy - it's so much fun watching them!
