Full Size Sketch for Gum Nuts Painting

Now, if I hadn't done a sketch for this and tried to work out the whites and the darks, I wouldn't have known that I was cutting the paper straight in two pieces with that one long stem - so put it behind the dark green leaf instead.
What do you think? Calling on all the value fairies to help me out with this one.
I'll start the pours tomorrow after I transfer the sketch to the hotpress paper.

I hope you don't mind my saying, just trying to be helpful ;) - I think the dark value of the green leaf (in front of the stem) - does EXACTLY the same thing - cutting your composition in half vertically.

It's smack in the middle (at least on the photo I see) and the values on either side of the divide are too much the same, which adds to the division factor.

Could you crop part of the compoition at either edge, so the darkest value is more asymetrical? Just my 2 cents worth.... :)

I think this is going to be really neat. I have never seen these gum nuts before and I think they are so interesting. This is going to make a great painting.

Bonny, you're right - I see it clearly now that it's on the screen - I got that leaf too dark but I think I'll just add darks in around it to bring in more in line with the rest of the painting as I like the leaf where it is - you'll see, it'll work :)
Thanks, Vicki! The photo came from Joy in Australia. I've never seen one of these in real life, either. Love the colors, though.

Bonny, are you in British Columbia? I just looked at your web page - gosh, you love to travel and take great pics from your various travels - and what gorgeous red hair! Thanks for being one of the value fairies taking a look and commenting on this - funny how you don't "see" something until you put it on the screen like that and then it jumps out at you!

Hi Ronda,

love that photo, your sketch is great, though I think you need more darks. I am learning values and never have enough darks in my paintings....:) let us know what Sandy says too!

Rhonda, I got in too late on this to say what Bonny did, but those were my exact thoughts when I looked at the value sketch this morning. I think I like your idea of the addition of that same darkest value surrounding that big leaf, that should integrate better with the painting. I also agree with you that it is amazing that we don't notice things until they are "published" online and then bothersome details jump out at us. Strange phenomena.

Bonny, Dawn, and Susan, you are my value fairies on this one, not letting me get by without a good value study before putting that sketch onto the wc paper :) I'll add in some darks to the sketch here and there and show it again for your approval before transferring it to the hotpress paper. Susan, I think because I was "done" with this sketch and felt so proud of myself for catching the stem, I didn't really "LOOK" at it closely again! Just laziness - or I needed to take a breather before looking at it again. Sometimes we are too close - but I saw it when I posted it and looked at it. I knew someone (in this case, you, Dawn, and Bonny) would let me know I couldn't get by with that! ha ha
