Radial Girls - Redo

I just wasn't happy with the first start - didn't think the leaves fit or did anything for the composition so I just wiped them out (didn't know how easy it would be but, apparently, paint over texture medium wipes out easily!). And then went for my original idea - the dark hair and tying the figures together with that.

It's not finished yet - things to do but not sure what or where - and some more shaping of the bodies a bit. Wondering about still tying things in with some line work in that star shape? Will think about it.

Today has been a busy day. A few photo members came by at 10 for a mini-workshop Jerry was giving. Then we visited one of Jerry's former students this evening who is in from Oregon. (We were awakened this morning at 4am by the neighbor's car alarm going off. Turns out, it was deer setting it off! They were in our back and side yards. He's a hunter so they were probably trying to steal his truck as payback! :)

I like what you've done so far, Rhonda - and I like it better without the leaves. I like the way you joined the hair together to make a single shape.

I was wondering if, because they are propped up on their elbows you might want to have something a little more solid under them.

I'll be checking in to see how this progresses. This looks like the most ambitious of your projects so far.

It's a very interesting image to work with, and as you go with more variations of composition/color/elements, you're going to come up with some really cool stuff!

I like how you tied them with the hair on this one - might be a good idea to have touches of the hair color in other areas of the painting. I agree it's better sans the leaves.

Haven't even started my first one yet, and Myrna is already planning the next one - pressure's on :-)

Thanks much, Michelle and Nava :) Those leaves just had to go! ha-ha And you're right, Michelle, I need to solidify the ground under them since they are propped up in those poses - maybe carry around a circle shape like they are in a bubble? Hmmmm...
Nava, no pressure at all - this one may be taking me a few weeks!!!

Oh yes...much better with just the figures and the hair! Lovely. I've joined in on the project too, just going with whatever Myrna picks. It is challenging, and I think it will help me to think a little more BEFORE I start painting.
Can't wait to see where you take this!

This version is much more pleasing ot me, I didn't care for those "leaves" so much. This has a spark, something colorful amd fanciful, yet retaining something of the realistic. Way to go to tie everything together. Now, just model those figures with some of those colors you added instead of the leaves, it should be great!

This is such an interesting process. Members of my painting group have taken Myrna's portraiture class (in person) and really enjoyed it. I'm going to check out her blog and see about doing these challenges. I like the idea of starting with technique and compositional elements. And I enjoyed reading about your adventurous approach to investigating the possibilities and seeing where they carry you. It's a lovely piece!

Thanks, Tracy. I'm at a stand-still right now with it but will do more when I come up with the next step - it does make you think.

Thanks, Jana and Susan :) It still needs a bit more - but I've been in a reading frenzy instead for 2 days so no painting except a start on the WatercolorWorkshop group painting from Gina's photo (a landscape! which I never do well)

Only just getting to move around various artists blogs (especially those who have troubled to post a comment on my new one) and I could not resist checking out the two RADIAL GIRLS works. Love how you moved on with this composition including the strong base colour. Reminds me of me trying to do shoulder stands at my yoga class - feel as though my body is in three places at once as I have just returned after a long layoff due to injured shoulder. Enjoying the freedom with which you use your watercolours.
