Saturday, September 29, 2007 - Susan's Dragonfly 2

I was getting too impatient with the little details on the dragonfly painting so stopped. It needs more highlights on the wings and more detail on the veins before it can be called done. But this is what I have now.

You mention getting impatient with the details of the dragon fly...check out the article in the newest issue of Artists' Magazine. I can't remember the artist's name right now but the detail with which he paints bugs and foliage is just amazing and he does the details twice since he always begins with a black and white underpainting first! There is a dragon fly in this article that will just blow you away.

I like the softness of your painting colors, nice background for the dragon fly.

Thanks, Susan. I will check out the Artist's Magazine and see that - I must have skipped through it this month because I don't remember that article. But I can use all the help I can get with this little critter.

I really like this, Rhonda! How did you make the dragonfly's wings look so delicate?

It is looking beautiful, Rhonda. You've come a long way in the last couple of years. I am enjoying your pencil work along with your watercolors.

That background looks wonderful Rhon, I like the way your worked on its wings after the 1st post of it, the dragonfly seems now completely integrated with the background and still it's 100% visible, now don't rush at this point, you don't want to ruin it at this stage!!!
2 thumbs up for you :D

Rhonda,

I finally found the Artist's Magazine I had lost, it was shuffled in with travel brochures! Anyway, check out pages 56-61 in the October 2007 issue, the artist's name is Ric Pas. Amazing detail he does!

Gosh, I have never had more than 1 or 2 comments on any day - I thought something was wrong getting 6!! ha-ha Thanks so much for the comments, Susan, Teresa, Ann and Michelle. Susan, I'll check out the October 2007 issue of the mag. Michelle, it was just luck to get the softness but I did have to misket a lot of whites in odd shapes (Sandy, my wc teacher made me!). I think it may need to be punched up a bit more as it's too soft for me now. Teresa, thanks for your comments - you know I always value your good eyes. Ann, thanks so much. I feel I've grown this year a lot, too - more drawing and more seeing shapes (finally!).
